What or rather who is behind SpaceFrog Designs?

To find out, we need to take a short trip to Kentucky, the 15th state in the USA. Kentucky is the home of Daniel Boone, as well as Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. Kentucky's nickname is the ‘Bluegrass State’, alluding to the huge, shimmering blue-green pastures. It is a gently rolling landscape, comparable to the Black Forest - dark forests, grass-covered hills and a pleasantly mild climate with an average annual temperature of 14 degrees.

Katherine and Vernon, an artist couple and the creators of SpaceFrog Designs, live here. Katherine takes care of the creative side of things, while Vernon looks after the technical side. Katherine, who studied oil painting and printmaking, is inspired by the beautiful landscape around her Kentucky home - and it is precisely these impressions that flow into many of her works.

Where does the funny name SpaceFrog Designs come from?

The name probably originated from an incident in 2013, when cameras discovered a small frog clinging to the outer shell of the spacecraft during a rocket launch. The photo went viral and became known in the USA as the ‘Spacefrog’. Perhaps Katherine and Vernon thought that the idea of a frog in space was so wonderfully abstract when they were looking for a name - just like many of their works.

How are the artworks from SpaceFrog Designs created?

"Nature is the central influence of my work. I am fascinated by complex and simple relationships between colours, shapes and textures," says Katherine about her work. She describes her style as calm and balanced, with lots of colour and texture - often complemented by a touch of gold.

The ideas often come to her in the middle of the night. She then sketches her first impressions in ink, pencil, watercolour or pastel. The final touches are applied digitally. Katherine and Vernon therefore see themselves more as designers than traditional artists.

The visual language of the works by SpaceFrog Designs

The art by SpaceFrog Designs can be described as inspiring, colourful and modern. The technique is reminiscent of classic illustrations as used in print media - in the tradition of artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec or Gustav Klimt. While Toulouse-Lautrec became famous for Parisian posters and Klimt worked with gold, nature is the main motif in SpaceFrog Designs - preferably landscapes and animals, which are depicted in a stylised and often dreamy manner.
